The Magic Brand Continues to Shine

Jerome Green

September 28, 2009

I drove down to Cabrillo High School not knowing what to expect. Etop sent me the schedule and he was very excited about the line up. There are so many times that an event operator will say certain high powered teams are going to play and then someone doesn’t show up.

As I entered the gym on court 1 was Price vs. Laverne Lutheran. There had to be at least 200 fans in the gym and there was action going on the two other courts. The product of Elite basketball travels well and Etop and Brian have worked their Magic once again, moving the “League” from HAX where they are no longer affiliated to Cabrillo High School. While I prefer the HAX location in proximity to my house, the drive to Cabrillo was well worth it. They have proven that basketball doesn’t need a lot of bells and whistles to have a loyal fan base.  Their product, high level basketball, media attention and knowledge of the High School landscape travels well.

All and All the Compton Magic league = Great Value for the fan and the teams.

Players of note

Keith Shamburger,  I got to spend some  face time with my guy Keith Shamburger who is a great kid and very good player. I watched his team, Serra, dismantle Pasadena and would say that as Keith goes, so will Serra.  He is a Portland Commit and they will be getting a very good one.

Allan Crabbe, Price (Cal commit) still has the sweetest jumper on the West coast

Richard Solomon Price (Cal commit) continues to look like he’s growing and could get to 6-11. Looks like he has some growth left. He had some huge rebounds down the stretch for Price

Deonte Burton, Compton Centennial)  is sill an amazing athlete who just needs to decide what kind of basketball player he wants to be.

Kurt Davis, Compton Centennial has a lot of upside, he has the ability to be an outstanding player at the next level

#11 Compton Centennial, his defense is D1 level, but he needs to do more to make his teammates better on the offensive end .

Laverne has a very good shot at winning the State Championship in their division.

There were many other top players in the gym and if you want to see some good basketball, go check out the league.  Admission is $5.00 and there is no parking fee.

Quality Rises to the Top

Jerome Green

September 28, 2009

While the Nike ABA/Hoop Masters league doesn’t have some of the top High School talent in their league, they do have a variety of teams for 11u-17u in the league. There are teams Bishop Montgomery, Montebello and Westchester’s second team (playing as Hoop Masters) are the top High School teams in the league down at California State University Dominguez Hills.  The league is very well run thanks to Margie and Kenny Bibbins long standing history with running youth basketball events over the past 12 years. Their tireless efforts make for a team and fan friendly environment. They have one of the best snack bars, with reasonable prices and treat you like you are important.  Teaming with Hoop Masters brings two programs with a combined 30+ years of experience between them together to provide a quality product.

All the games are 8 min stop clock quarters and their Referees assignor Reggie Mallard, only gets the CIF best, refs who have done City Championship games and are very professional and run the floor.

Some of the most exciting moments of the day were the Tribe 12u team getting their first win, it’s always great to see kids experience winning.  The second great moment of the day, was with 4.5 seconds left, Bishop Montgomery down 2 against Hoop Masters-Westchester, hitting a 3 to win the game with no time left on the clock.

If you are still looking for a great league to be in or want to know about the rest of the league and their other events, give them a call at 310-857-6400.

Admission $5.00 and the State requires parking of $4.00
