A Fundraiser to End Childhood Obesity

Did you know that more than 30 percent of American children and adolescents ages 6 to 19 are considered overweight or obese? Not only does this staggering statistic imply these children are leading unhealthy lifestyles now, it also means they are predisposed to developing numerous health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure later in life. However, with the right education and resources, these children can learn to make healthy choices that will positively alter the course of their lives. The CQ Movement founder and personal trainer, Crystal Quintana, has decided to help make this possible. Crystal has started a major fundraising effort from which all proceeds will benefit The Boys and Girls Club of Venice in their effort to establish fitness, nutrition, and environmental health programs.

In January 2008, Crystal will travel to Africa to hike 19,000 foot Mount Kilimanjaro in order to build awareness of this issue. On this six day trek, she will hike through stunning valleys, climb precipitous ridgelines, and scale ancient glaciers. In preparation for this exciting event, she is biking, rollerblading, running, core conditioning, and doing yoga and pilates. The climb also requires her to incorporate altitude training into her schedule. It is her hope that this climb will make a clear statement about the importance of ending childhood obesity through health education and awareness.

The CQ movement is involved in fundraising events to benefit The Boys and Girls Club of Venice. The CQ Movement plans to raise $19,000.00 (one dollar for every foot Crystal climbs). In the coming months, Crystal will host several healthy spa parties in collaboration with The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and a series of fall fitness workouts, including a six week beach core workout class and a six week hiking class. She has also created The Boys & Girls Movement 5K Run/Walk: A Fundraiser to End Childhood Obesity on January 5, 2008. The 5K walk/run is open to anyone who would like to participate, and participants who sign up through The CQ Movement will receive 6 weeks of free training in preparation for the event!

Sponsorship opportunities are available to help Crystal train, travel to Africa and climb Mt. Kilimanjaro to build awareness about ending childhood obesity.
