Windward Winter Basketball Classic Tips Off This Weekend

12/13/2007
The second annual Windward Winter Basketball Classic tournament tips off this Saturday and brings some of the top varsity basketball teams from around the area to the Jackson Center.
Eight teams will play four games a piece in a bracket system that will determine the winner after about a week's worth of games. Windward's Boys Varsity Basketball Head Coach Miguel Villegas says that "this year there are a lot of tough teams, any of them could make a run in the league playoffs," Miguel says. "But we have a lot of talent and we're looking good to repeat." Windward's won last year's tournament.
Windward will face off against teams from as far away as San Diego, but Miguel says the boys will be in familiar company as they have already competed and won several regional small-school tournaments this year.
Most recently, Windward dominated in La Jolla where they claimed victory over teams at the La Jolla Country Day School tournament. A week earlier the boys took home the championship in Cypress at the Brethren Christian School tourney.
Coach Mig says tournaments like these strengthen team bonds and allow the boys good-natured competition in the early stages of the regular season. He says a lot of times it's just a good opportunity to see some old friends: "It's fun because a lot of the teams the boys play against have people they know from earlier leagues growing up. The tournament gives the team a fun opportunity to go for a goal."
