The Record Doesn’t Always Tell The Whole Story

Windward School boys basketball team (9-6 going into Tuesday night) spent the pre-league season feasting on a rich diet of quality teams and of their 6 loses, only one, (Taft) was a game they didn’t have a chance to win. Coach Miguel Villegas, does a great job of putting his team in events and tournaments, prior to league play that prepares them well for the meat of the season.
Windward, after defeating Campbell Hall last Friday night, at Campbell Hall, 62-54, traveled to Valley Christian in Cerritos on Tuesday night and beat the Crusaders 80-56. In the beginning, Valley Christian put up a good fight, hitting outside shots and keeping the score close, but by the end of the first half, Windward’s balanced attack, Nick Stover hitting his first 3 shots, as well as Jacob Rubin, making a rare appearance in the scoring column by hitting 3-3’s, pulled a way. Windward’s best player, Wesley Saunders, who is averaging 26 points and 11 rebounds game, had his usual productive night, I don’t’ have his scoring totals as of this posting, but for the most part he was able to coast most of the night. Starting point guard, Kwame Firempong, is starting to really step up and run the team as well as hitting his outside shot.
Windward has a deep bench of talented players and will be in the hunt for the Div 5 state title. Their next game is Friday night, at home, versus Montclair Prep at 7:30 pm.
