Day I of 2008 Weschester Tournament
Westchester 72 Windward 52
The score does not tell the whole story. Westchester came out intent on demonstrating why they are a power to be reckoned with in the state and maybe nationally. Windward went down 11-2, before they could get a little untracked and make a small run, but Westchester overall speed, tenacious defense and athleticism was too much for Windward. It seemed that no matter who Westchester put in the game, that they just kept coming. There are several emerging young players( Jordan Mayes, Kareem Jamar, Denzel and 6-9 Reggie Murphy) along with the experienced veteran, Dominic OConner( who seem to hit every shot he took). I have been critical of Dumo in the past, but this fall he has really shifted his game to become a better overall point guard.
Darrius Morris, after sitting out the remainder of the summer and all fall is still searching for his conditioning and timing, and I am sure in a few weeks, he'll be in top form. The star of the tournament for Windward at this point is Wesley Saunders. He has filled out and has really developed a competitive personality by playing for the Compton Magic this past spring and summer. Wesley appears to have a tremendous upside.
Windward is still struggling with how to get the ball their big guy, Anthony Stover, and Stover is struggling with how to combat double teams and physical play, but on the defensive end, the big fella depends the basket pretty well.
Compton Dominguez Hills vs Bishop Montgomery
I left at half time, but this was no contest. CDH was up by 25 at half and it didn't look like Bishop was making a comeback. Kaila king looked good in the first half and Justin Cobbs looked like he can't wait to get to college next year.
