Oaks Christian Girls Get Pool Play Win
December 9, 2009
Jack Pollon

The Oaks Christian of Westlake Village girls basketball continued its hot start to the season Wednesday in a 78-60 pool play victory against Newbury Park at the Buena of Ventura tournament.

Junior Crystal Owusu scored 22 points and had 12 rebounds, taking advantage of attention being paid to forward Katie Brooks and sophomore point guard Brianna Barrett.

Owusu scored eight points in the first quarter as the Lions (5-0) recovered from a slow start to take a four point lead and never looked back.

Brooks had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds and Barrett finished with seven points and four assists.

Oaks Christian put the game away by halftime thanks to a 15-1 run at the outset of the second quarter.

"We didn't come up with the same intensity like we did last week when we won the Crescenta Valley tournament," Barrett said. "We have to come ready to play every day and put fear into the eyes of the other teams."

The Lions won their 27th game against only two losses going back to last season.

Oaks Christian also received contributions from freshman Megan McIntyre, Beth Mounier and Azhya Aupiu, who combined to score 19 points.

Newbury Park was led by junior Hanna Burge's 21 points, includng three 3-pointers.

The Panthers are still trying to figure out how to play without stars Doris Park-Sherman and Sidney Dobnar, who graduated last year.

Oaks Christian plays Camarillo today at 4 p.m. and will face its biggest test of the season on Friday against highly regarded Buena.
