Recap of War on the Floor with Box Scores

June 14, 2009

Jack Pollon

The first-ever War on the Floor Future Stars all-star games presented players from the class of 2010 the opportunity to display their talents Saturday at Taft HS in Woodland Hills.  Both the boys’ and the girls’ games were extremely competitive, with the girls’ game going into double overtime, and in each game an Agoura player captured MVP honors.  Stephan Hicks had 21 points and 14 rebounds to lead his team to an 87-82 win in the boys’ game, while Brittany Oster had 30 points and 15 rebounds, and scored all 6 of her team’s points in extra time, in a 103-99 victory.

Girls’ Game:  East 103, West 99 (Double Overtime)

Brittany Oster had 4 of her game-high 30 points in the second overtime, earning MVP honors and leading her East team to a 103-99 win in a most entertaining game in the girls’ game.

Oster made four free throws in the second 30-second overtime after scoring the first basket of the first overtime, only to see Taft’s Rmanii Haynes answer with a basket to send the game to a second overtime.  Oster also grabbed 15 rebounds, easily a game-high total, and was the easy choice for Most Valuable Player.

But the game went back and forth several times, with each team overcoming and surrendering a double-digit lead.  The East went on a 7-0 run early in the second quarter to take a 15-point lead at 35-20, only to see the West finish the first half on an 18-4 run to take a

51-49 lead at the break after a pair of free throws by Monica Jackson

(Chatsworth) with 10.4 seconds left in the second quarter.

The game was tied at 63 midway through the third quarter, but the West finished the third quarter on a 13-4 run to lead, 76-67 after three quarters.  The led ballooned to 12 points at 81-69 in the third quarter, but then the East surged in front late with an 11-0 run that gave it a 92-86 lead after a free throw by Angelica Sahagun (Alemany) with just less than three minutes remaining.

The West wiped out most of that deficit, however, with a 3-pointer by Leticia Pelayo (Sylmar) and single free throws by Jackson and Erin Dautremont (Chaminade) that made it a one-point game at 94-93 with 40 seconds left.  Then Jackson fed Pelayo for a basket that gave the West a 95-94 lead with 20 seconds left.  A pair of free throws by Destinee Sellers (Chatsworth) with 16.4 seconds left made it a 3-point game at 97-94.

As the East brought the ball upcourt, the West guarded the 3-point line.  Finally, as the clock was winding down, Sarah Rebibo (El Camino Real) got the ball inside to Emily Cohen (Calabasas), who drove to the basket.  She not only made the lay-up, but somehow managed to draw a foul as well.  The ensuing free throw with 1.5 seconds remaining tied the game, sending it to overtime.

Oster put her team in front in the first overtime with a short jumper to make it 99-97, but Haynes took a pass from Taft teammate Amari Hampton and scored to tie it at 99 and send the game to a second overtime.  In the second overtime, however, Oster drew a foul on Jackson, her 6th of the game, and made a pair of free throws to put her team back in front, 101-99.  After a miss by Pelayo at the other end, Oster got the rebound, was fouled and made the resulting free throws with 13.0 seconds left to finally clinch the win for the East.

In addition to Oster, three players scored in double figures for the victorious East.  Sahagun had 16 points, 4 assists and 3 steals.

Cassie Pappas (Crescenta Valley) had 15 points, all in the second half and 11 in the fourth quarter.  And Destinee La Fountain (Royal) had 12 points plus 6 rebounds.  Brooke Lemar (Canyon) added 7 points and a game-high 8 assists.

For the West, Jackson led the way with 23 points and 3 assists before fouling out.  Pelayo had 16 points, and Katie Brooks (Oaks Christian) had 13 points plus 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 blocked shots.  Haynes had a strong all-around game with 10 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds and 5 steals.  Sellers had 9 points and 8 boards, while Dautremont had 8 points and 6 rebounds.

At halftime of the girls’ game, there was a 3-point shooting contest with each of the six contestants making as many shots as possible in one minute.  Taylor Ignoto (Westlake) dominated the event, making 19 shots in the first round and 14 more in the second round, easily outdistancing runner-up Erin Dautremont (Chaminade) and the rest of the field in each round.

Dautremont made the finals with a first-round total of 12, edging Monica Jackson (Chatsworth), who had 9.  Jenny Lentz (Valencia), Cassie Pappas (Crescenta Valley) and Leticia Pelayo (Sylmar) each made 5 shots.

Boys’ Game:  East 87, West 82

Stephan Hicks (Agoura) had 21 points and 14 rebounds to earn MVP honors, and Coltrane Powdrill (Crescenta Valley) also had a double-double as the East posted an 87-82 victory in the first-ever War on the Floor Future Stars game Saturday at Taft HS.

Hicks scored 6 of his 21 points in the final two minutes as the East pulled away late, extending a two-point lead at 78-76 to a commanding

86-77 advantage.  Hicks also scored 6 straight points in the second quarter to answer a 13-0 West run that saw the West take a 25-21 lead at one point.

This one was close all the way, with neither team ever building a double-digit lead.  The East had a 9-point edge at 21-12 after a traditional 3-point play by Andrew Farhadi (Buckley) near the end of the first quarter, but then came the West’s 13-0 run to take a 25-21 lead early in the second quarter.  Hicks’ six straight points put the East back in front, and the lead went back and forth the rest of the half with the East taking a 2-point lead at the break at 36-34 after a 3-pointer by Myles Mungcal (Chatsworth) in the final minute of the second quarter.

The third quarter saw the offenses for both teams perk up.  The East scored the first six points of the quarter, but then the West went on a 16-2 run to take a 50-44 lead after a basket by C.J. Faulwell (Simi Valley).  However, the Weest quickly responded, taking a 59-57 lead on a 3-pointer by Andre Fowler (Reseda).  It was tied at 60 when Jason Johnson (Cleveland) scored on a putback in the final seconds of the quarter to make it 62-60 in favor of the East entering the final period.

The East led the rest of the way, but the West kept it close and threatened to go back in front.  The East scored the first six points of the quarter to go ahead, 68-60, only to see the West score the game’s next seven points to close within a single point at 68-67.

Then the East built a 78-71 lead with just over three minutes remaining, but a 3-pointer by Pierson Williams (Taft) and a lay-up by Danny Cox (Simi Valley) made it 78-76 with just over two minutes left.

Finally, thanks largely to Hicks, the East pulled away.  First he took a pass from Jermaine Dansby (Community Charter) and scored to make it 80-76.  Then he made a pair of free throws to make it 82-76.

After Williams made one – out of three – free throws for the West, Powdrill took a pass from Josh Greene (Community Charter) and went in for the lay-up to make it 84-77.  Hicks’ basket on a pass from Johnson made it 86-77 and clinched the win for the East.

In addition to Hicks, there were two other players who scored in double figures for the East.  Powdrill had the double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, and also had 6 blocked shots.  And Hasan Khan

(Agoura) chipped in with 10 points.  Fowler had a solid all-around game with 9 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals.

And Farhadi contributed 8 points, 8 rebounds and a team-high 5 assists.

For the West, Williams led the way with 13 points (4 threes) plus 5 rebounds and 3 assists.  Sam Natt (Taft) had 12 points (3 threes) plus 3 rebounds and 5 assists.  Cox had 10 points and 5 boards.

Jordan Coleman (Calabasas) had 9 points while Treyare Holden (El Camino Real) and Patrick McBride (Newbury Park) each had 8.  Sahdi Odu (Birmingham) had just a single point but grabbed a team-high 9 rebounds.
