After being told by Campbell Hall High of North Hollywood officials Thursday he didn't have enough high school experience to coach its basketball team, Steve Wachs was offered the position Friday afternoon and accepted.
It appeared earlier in the day that Taft of Woodland Hills coach Derrick Taylor would take the job, but after mulling it over Taylor decided to remain at of Taft.
Wachs replaces Terry Kelly, who stepped down at the end of last season.
Campbell Hall athletic director Juan Velasquez said no one was formally offered the job Thursday but discussions were held with Taylor, Wachs and Birmingham of Lake Balboa coach Jarvis Turner.
But when Taylor dropped out, the job was offered to Wachs, who coached at Brentwood last year and is a former assistant at Loyola Marymount and Cal Poly Pomona.
Taylor was the leading candidate, and agonized whether or not to make the move.
"I was honored and thankful Campbell Hall thought highly of me and offered me the postion," Taylor said. "I just couldn't leave Taft at this point. I really enjoyed the process at Campbell Hall and was very close to making the transition."
